Art therapy Definition

The use of art, usually visual, such as painting or sculpture as an adjunctive therapy in the treatment of neurological, mental, or behavioral problems.

Art therapy Purpose

Research on art therapy has been conducted in clinical, educational, physiological, forensic, and sociological arenas. Art therapy is a means for the patient to receive critical insight into emotions, thoughts, feelings, foster self-awareness, self-discovery, self-worth, express emotions, fears and unspoken and frequently unconscious concerns about his/her disease, that they cannot express through conventional means.  It is particularly valuable with children who often cannot talk about their real concerns. It produces relaxation and relieves stress. Art therapy can trigger an emotional catharsis. In addition to its use in treatment, it can be used to assess individuals, couples, families, and groups. Studies on art therapy have been conducted in many areas including with burn recovery in adolescent and young patients, with eating disorders; with emotional impairment in young children, with reading performance, with chemical addiction, and with sexual abuse in adolescents. Because it relaxes it can help the immune system, help with insomnia and depression, and can help  circulatory problems (like high blood pressure and irregular heartbeats). When used alone or in combination with other relaxation techniques such as guided imagery, art therapy can effectively relieve stress. Art therapy can also help patients cope with pain. This therapy can promote physiological healing when patients identify and work through anger, resentment, and other emotional stressors. It is often prescribed to accompany pain control therapy for chronically and terminally ill patients.
