Alexander technique Definition

Method for improving physical and mental functioning, and a method of improving the posture that involves developing awareness of it. Excessive physical and mental tension, restricts movement and creates pressure in the joints, the spine, the breathing mechanism, and other organs. The Alexander Technique is an educational attempt to prevent the physical decline caused by habituated mannerisms. A stiffened  pattern of the neck, head and back is shown to be the source of many self-imposed limitations. Keeping muscles tense when they don't need to be contracted is something like leaving the kitchen light switch on all day because kitchen lights so often "need" to be on. Pay attention to the quality, sequence, timing and direction of balancing the head at the top of the neck and the ability to respond with every other part of the body improves. The objective is for a person's innate mind/body coordination to re-emerge. The Alexander Technique is a method of teaching ways to restore our natural balance, flexibility and ease of movement. It teaches the use of the appropriate amount of effort for a particular activity, releasing more energy for all our activities. It is not a series of treatments or exercises, but rather a reeducation of the mind and body that helps you discover a new balance in your body by releasing unnecessary tension. Teachers us sidestepping, stalling, tricking, boring the old habitual reaction - anything is fair game so the old habit can disengage, leaving the freedom to try something new.

Alexander Technique Purpose

The goal of the technique is to restore freedom and expression to the body and clear thinking to the mind. It improves overall functioning, both mental and physical, it offers a wide range of benefits. Helps with high blood pressure, breathing, depth of sleep, overall cheerfulness and mental alertness, resilience against outside pressures, rheumatism, including various forms of arthritis, then respiratory troubles, and even potentially lethal asthma, following in their wake, circulation defects, which may lead to high blood pressure and also to some dangerous heart conditions; gastrointestinal disorders of many types, various gynecological conditions, sexual failures, migraines, depressive states, improvements in back pain, chronic pain, postural problems, repetitive strain injury, benefits during pregnancy and childbirth, help in applying physical therapy and rehabilitative exercises, improvements in strain caused by computer use, improvements in the posture and performance of school children, and improvements in vocal and dramatic performance among the benefits offered by the technique.
