Hormone replacement therapy DefinitionEstrogen and progesterone is available in nonsynthetic (natural) or synthetic (laboratory-produced) forms. Of course we will only talk here about natural hormone replacement therapy HRT. Natural estrogen is either processed from the urine of horses, or from plants. Natural plant progesterone are made from Mexican yams and soybeans. It can be taken orally in the form of a tablet or used as a skin patch. It also may be applied to the vagina as a cream when the primary reasons for using it are to prevent thinning of the vaginal lining and to prevent painful intercourse. Studies have shown that hormones are actually absorbed better through the skin (and vagina) than through the stomach, substantially cutting dosage requirements. Natural hormones can safely and effectively duplicate the body's own hormones and functions, but because they only address the underlying causes of hormone imbalance one needs to look at other natural approaches. The alternative medical approach focuses on strengthening the female body by encouraging it to balance, regulate, and normalize itself during the transition to menopause. Alternative treatments during menopause usually favor non-drug therapies. They shift the emphasis from HRT to natural ways of encouraging the body to balance and heal itself. They focus on dietary, nutritional, and lifestyle changes supplemented by therapies such as acupuncture, herbs, and homeopathic remedies that have been shown to be effective. Specific dietary and nutritional changes with nutritional and herbal supplements have been shown to alleviate the discomforts of menopause: hot flashes, night sweats, heart palpitations, and vaginal dryness, as well as to reduce the risk of osteoporosis and heart disease. Natural therapies avoid side effects and the risks of prescription hormone replacement. Alternative treatments have been shown to enhance the effects of HRT by reducing dosage requirements, thus alleviating the health risks associated with HRT or even eliminating some side effects. In some women they have been shown to eliminate the need for HRT altogether. Hormone replacement therapy Purpose
The primary goals of estrogen and progesterone replacement therapy are: To relieve symptoms such as hot flashes, vaginal dryness, and urinary problems, to help prevent osteoporosis, to help prevent arteriosclerosis, coronary artery disease. protecting against uterine cancer, increasing HDL ( good cholesterol), lowering LDL (bad cholesterol), and causing arteries to constrict and dilate when they should. These goals are accomplished by restoring the level of estrogen in the patient to the premenopause levels.Click here to go to the next Therapy page
