Imagery DefinitionPositive mental images brought to once mind, by self or more often a specialist, for inner growth or healing purposes. These are images one would normally not have thought of so intently or at this time. These images can be brought on by hearing, seeing, touching, smelling, and tasting, but more often these thoughts are brought on by suggestions or hypnosis. It may be images of attitude, emotions, nature, exercise, faith, fantasy, health, nutrition, and posture. It may come in forms like ocean, woods, mountains, waterfalls, brooks, music art, poetry, angels, animals, deceased relatives, fairies, long-lost friends, a religious figures, political figures, or hero figures, pleasant fantasies, travel etc. Imagery is the language that the mind uses to communicate with the body. As a mental process, it is often defined as "any thought representing a sensory quality." It includes, the visual, as well as, all the senses---aural, tactile, olfactory, proprioceptive, and kinesthetic. Imagery PurposeI Imagery is used in the treatment of mental disorders. Mental images can be used as a form of psychotherapy and as an aid to relaxation This imagery may be used as part of hypnosis, of many types of training, of relaxation, and of behavior therapy. Pleasant fantasies are used to counter the unpleasant feelings associated with anxiety . It can relieve pain, speed healing and help the body subdue hundreds of ailments, including depression, impotence, allergies and asthma, as well as change attitudes, behavior, or physiological reactions, for alleviating nausea and vomiting associated with chemotherapy in cancer patients, to relieve stress, and to facilitate weight gain in cancer patients. It has been successfully used and tested for pain control in a variety of settings; as adjunctive therapy for several diseases, including diabetes; and with geriatric patients to enhance immunity. Imagery is usually combined with other behavioral approaches. It is best known in the treatment of cancer as a means to help patients mobilize their immune systems, but it also is used as part of a multidisciplinary approach to cardiac rehabilitation and in many settings that specialize in treating chronic pain.
