Reiki DefinitionThe word rei-ki is Japanese. The literal meaning of this word is cosmos or free passage (rei) and energy (ki, chi or qi) representing the Universal Life Energy or transcendental spirit. Reiki is based on the belief that when spiritual energy is channeled through a reiki practitioner, the patient's spirit is healed, which in turn heals the physical body. Some practitioners believe that they are able to direct Reiki energy at will through the palms of their hands, into specific parts of their own or others' bodies, in order to to enhance the body's natural ability to heal and harmonize itself (body, mind, and spirit), through the balancing of energy. While other healers place the hands above the recipient; and let the recipient then draw the energy as needed. In this case the individual being healed takes a very active part in the healing process. It is a form of therapy that uses simple hands-on, no-touch, and visualization techniques, with the goal of improving the flow of life energy in a person. The practitioner is trained to detect and alleviate problems of energy flow on the physical, emotional, and spiritual level. The Reiki system's postulate is that activated "Sacred Universal Symbols" evoke "healing energies." Many Reikis incorporate elements of just about every other alternative healing practice, such as spiritual healing, auras, crystals, chakra balancing, meditation, aromatherapy, naturopathy, and homeopathy.
Reiki PurposeReiki claims to provide many of the same benefits as traditional massage therapy, such as reducing stress, stimulating the immune system, increasing energy, and relieving the pain and symptoms of health conditions. Practitioners have reported success in helping patients with acute and chronic illnesses, from asthma and arthritis to trauma and recovery from surgery. Reiki is a gentle and safe technique, and has been used successfully in some hospitals. It has been found to be very calming and reassuring for those suffering from severe or fatal conditions. Reiki can been used by doctors, nurses, psychologists and other health professionals to bring touch and deeper caring into their healing practices. Reiki energy has several basic effects: it brings about deep relaxation, destroys energy blockages, detoxifies the system, provides new vitality in the form of healing universal life energy, and increases the vibrational frequency of the body. Patients report feeling various sensations: heat, cold, pressure and the like. This is attributed to Reiki energy filling the body and aura of the recipient and acting: filling up the energy deficiences, repairing and opening the energy channels and dissolving the blocks of stale energy. Reiki is an Eastern form of medicine that defines full health as total harmony of body, mind and spirit, so it is said that Reiki heals all mentioned parts of a human being. Proponents of Reiki claim that it can cure any affliction. The merit of Reiki is that it uses only energy – no medicaments with side effects are used. Moreover, it should be noted that Reiki is especially good at restoring vitality and reducing stress.
