Failed Back Surgery Syndrome (FBSS) Treatment
Spine or back surgery can be a solution for chronic back pain conditions. Laminectomy is one of the common spine surgeries that can remove bone or tissue pressing on nerves in the spine, causing pain. In some cases, back surgery is not effective at relieving the pain. This is termed failed back surgery syndrome, or FBSS. Our neuro-spine surgeon surgeons at DOCS Health offer failed back surgery syndrome (FBSS) treatment at our medical center in Los Angeles.
FBSS or post-laminectomy syndrome is a frustrating condition. After undergoing invasive back or spine surgery to remove compression on the spinal cord or nerve roots to relieve pain and dysfunction, patients may not receive the results desired. They may experience the same pain and mobility restrictions as before, or have symptoms or pain in other areas. The symptoms are different for each patient and may depend on which area of the spine underwent surgery. These can include pain, weakness, numbness and stiffness, both in the area in the back and radiating to the legs, arms or other areas of the body.
Unfortunately, FBSS is more common than most people realize. About 20-40% of patients with cervical, thoracic or lumbar spine surgery for pain may still experience symptoms after their surgery, and many will have a reoccurrence within 1-2 years after their surgery. Our experienced neurologists and spine surgeons at DOCS Health can help those with FBSS find the right treatment to eliminate or minimize their symptoms.
Treatment for Post-Laminectomy Syndrome
FBSS and post-laminectomy syndrome symptoms can cause chronic pain and limit mobility. Interventional and minimally invasive pain treatments can be effective for managing pain and symptoms for many patients. Physical therapy, injection therapy, spinal cord stimulation, nerve blocks/ablation and other treatments may be recommended to resolve pain and symptoms. In severe cases where minimally invasive treatments are ineffective for FBSS, additional surgery may be recommended.
