Shoulder Tendonitis Treatment
Tendons connect muscles to bone. In the shoulder, there are several tendons that are vital to the function of the shoulder joints. Notably, the rotator cuff and bicep tendons are crucial components for shoulder strength, mobility and stability. When any of these shoulder tendons are injured or strained, it can lead to shoulder tendonitis, impingement and pain. Our sports injury and orthopedic specialists at DOCS Health offer effective shoulder tendonitis treatment at our Los Angeles medical center.
Causes and Symptoms of Rotator Cuff Tendonitis
The main tendons in the shoulder are the bicep tendons and the rotator cuff tendons. While any of these tendons can be injured or inflamed, shoulder tendonitis is often associated with rotator cuff tendonitis. The four rotator cuff tendons connect the shoulder muscles to the top of the upper arm bone, or humerus. These tendons help stabilize the shoulder joint as well as perform rotation and lifting motions. Tendonitis, or inflammation in the rotator cuff, can be caused by repetitive use, trauma, pinching or tears to the tendon.
When the shoulder tendons are inflamed, they can cause pain and shoulder impingement. Some of the symptoms of shoulder tendonitis include:
- Shoulder pain during use and at rest
- Limited range of motion
- Difficulty raising arm or putting it behind your back
- Weakness in arm and shoulder
Shoulder tendonitis treatment begins with conservative options. Rest, ice and anti-inflammatory medications or injections may offer pain relief. Physical therapy can help strengthen the supporting muscles and tissues. If there are severe injuries or tendon tears causing tendonitis, surgery may be required to repair the tissues.
If you have symptoms of shoulder tendonitis, treatment is available at DOCS Health. Contact our Los Angeles orthopedic clinic to schedule an appointment for the diagnosis and treatment of shoulder pain.
