The sciatic nerves are the largest nerves in the body, exiting the lumbar spine to travel into the pelvis and to each leg. When the sciatic nerves are irritated or compressed, it can cause a collection of symptoms that are referred to as sciatica. There are a wide assortment of spine and musculoskeletal issues that can cause sciatica, and finding the source of nerve irritation is vital for effective treatment. Our spine and orthopedic specialists at DOCS Health can provide an accurate diagnosis and sciatica treatment at our medical center in Los Angeles.

Causes and Symptoms of Sciatica

Sciatica is not a condition or disorder. It is caused by other conditions or injuries that result in irritation of the sciatic nerves that causes pain along the sciatic nerve pathway. Sciatica usually only affects one side of the body or one sciatic nerve. It can be caused by a variety of lower back and pelvic issues, including:

  • Lumbar herniated disc
  • Spondylolisthesis
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Degenerative spine disease (osteoarthritis, degenerative disc disease)
  • Lower back or pelvic injuries

Sciatica symptoms can impact the lower back, buttocks, legs and even the feet. Pain can occur anywhere on the sciatic nerve pathway, radiating from the lower back area down one leg. Nerve irritation can result in tingling, numbness or “pins and needles” in the affected leg. In some cases, weakness can occur in the leg or foot.

Sciatica treatment begins with diagnosing the cause of sciatic nerve irritation. Imaging, diagnostic testing and specific symptoms are explored to determine the source of nerve compression or inflammation.
