How Botox Is Used for Pain Management
Botox injections are extremely popular for fighting wrinkles and cosmetic enhancements, but you may not realize that Botox is also an effective medical treatment. This neurotoxin has been used for medical purposes for over 30 years and new uses are continuously being discovered. Botox can be used for pain management for some muscle-related conditions, including migraines and muscle spasms, as well as some joint and nerve pain disorders.
Botox is derived from botulinum bacteria, the bacteria that cause botulism. This strain of the neurotoxin works by blocking nerve receptors in the muscle, causing temporary paralysis. While this effect could be deadly in large amounts if ingested and impacting the heart or lungs, it is safe in tiny doses injected into the desired area.
Botox was first approved for the treatment of crossed eyes and eye spasms. By injecting it into the muscles causing the eye conditions, the muscles were relaxed, and the conditions improved. This is also how it was revealed that Botox smoothed frown lines, leading to the approval of Botox Cosmetic.
Botox for Pain Relief
Botox injections can be used as an interventional pain management treatment. This means that pain is stopped locally versus using medications that affect the rest of the body. Botox does not tend to migrate from one muscle to another once it takes effect. Botox takes a few days for effects to be felt, then lasts for 3-6 months before the proteins are broken down into amino acids and absorbed into the body. The following are some of the possible uses for pain relief or management with Botox.
Migraines
Migraine headaches can be debilitating when severe. Botox has been approved by the FDA for migraine pain relief. There are several injections given to help relax muscles that are related to chronic migraines. Botox cannot eliminate all migraines, but it has been shown effective at reducing the frequency and severity of migraines for many patients.
Cervical Dystonia
Botox is FDA-approved for the treatment of cervical dystonia, which involves muscle spasms around the neck. This rare condition can cause extreme neck pain, which can be reduced when the muscles are relaxed with the chemical reaction that occurs with Botox treatment.
Knee Osteoarthritis
While Botox has not been approved by the FDA for the treatment of knee osteoarthritis, there have been many studies showing its effectiveness for short-term pain relief. Since steroid injections must be limited for relieving arthritis joint pain, Botox may be an alternative to provide interventional pain treatment.
Trigger Point Muscle Pain
Trigger points are small clumps of knotted muscles that can cause chronic pain. Botox injections can be used to relax trigger points and provide relief from related muscle cramps and pain.
TMJ Disorders
Jaw or facial pain from TMJ disorders can be related to tense masseter muscles. Injections into the large jaw muscles can help relieve TMJ disorder pain for many patients, including headaches, and facial, neck, and jaw pain.
Nerve Pain
Peripheral nerve pain experienced with some disorders such as diabetes may be relieved with Botox injections. Peripheral neuropathy is damage to nerves that are in the limbs and other areas outside of the spinal cord.
Spasticity
Spasticity occurs when muscles contract uncontrollably, causing pain and functional issues. This can occur with cerebral palsy and many other conditions. Botox injections into the affected muscles have been shown to provide relief from spasticity pain and discomfort.
Are Botox Pain Treatments Safe?
Botox injections for pain treatment are safe when provided by an experienced physician. The doses used for pain management are small and are not toxic to the rest of the body. The most common side effects from Botox are redness, swelling, and bruising at the injection sites, but these dissipate quickly in the days after the treatment. Botox proteins will break down over several months and the effects of the neurotoxin will wear off on the targeted muscles.
